The Call That Changed Everything – Why I Left Emergency Medicine for Preventative Health

From Firefighter-Paramedic to Preventative Health Coach

For years, I served as a firefighter-paramedic in Prince George’s County, Maryland, responding to emergency calls that too often ended in tragedy. I saw firsthand what happens when people wait until it’s too late to take care of their health.

But one call changed everything for me. It made me walk away from emergency medicine—not because I couldn’t handle the job, but because I couldn’t handle watching people suffer when it never had to happen in the first place.

The Fire

Drowning in Her Own Body

The dispatch came in as trouble breathing—a routine call I had handled hundreds of times before.

But when we arrived, I saw the reality immediately: she was drowning.

Not in water, but in her own body. Her lungs were filling with fluid, every breath more desperate than the last. She was gasping, her body in full-blown panic mode, fighting for every second of air.

We pushed medications. We gave her oxygen. Nothing was working.

The CPAP Mask: A Lifeline That Felt Like a Trap

She needed a CPAP mask—a tight-fitting device that forces air into the lungs and allows us to deliver life-saving medication deep where it’s needed.

But CPAP isn’t easy to wear when you’re already struggling to breathe.

To her, the mask didn’t feel like help. It felt like a trap.

Imagine gasping for air as if you’re drowning, and then someone presses a mask tightly over your face, forcing air into your lungs. Your instincts tell you to fight it, rip it off, escape.

She fought us. Clawing, panicked, unable to tolerate the mask. And without it, we couldn’t deliver the full treatment she needed to survive.

From Alive to Gone in 30 Seconds

We raced to the ER, lights and sirens blaring.

She was still alive. Still fighting.

Then, just 30 seconds after we pulled in, she collapsed.

Ten minutes later, she was gone.

One moment, she was struggling. The next, she was lifeless.

And I stood there, realizing that I was too late again.

Why I Left Firefighting for Preventative Health

That call changed everything for me. But the hardest part?

She never should have needed me that night.

She didn’t die that night—she had been dying for years. One poor health choice at a time. One ignored symptom at a time.

I had spent years treating symptoms instead of solving the real problem. And that was what finally broke me.

The last two years in the fire service were some of the hardest of my life. I struggled with getting up and going to work. I felt trapped, exhausted, and like I was rebelling against my own life. I didn’t want to be there anymore, but I was too scared to leave.

Then this call happened. And I knew—I had to do something different.

So, I walked away from emergency medicine. Not because I couldn’t handle the stress, but because I couldn’t keep watching people die when I knew it could have been prevented.
